Advice for Life from the 5th Dalai Lama
Rimpoche offers more points of advice from the 5th Dalai Lama’s text: Advice on the two systems, such as not showing one’s life or dislike of people, not acting on the hearsay of other people, not overly praising others, not announcing one’s intentions if not sure if one can follow through, thinking carefully before taking a stand, not giving overly lavish gifts, etc.
Sometimes the worldly advice contradicts Dharma principles. Rimpoche notes that in an imperfect world, sometimes imperfect advice is appropriate. Pure Dharma can be followed perfectly in retreat, but not always in every life situation. We have to make up our own minds what is the most skillful, compassionate or least hurtful way to act, using our wisdom to reconcile the worlds of Dharma and the mundane world.
