Four Reliabilities, the Third
Rimpoche reviews the first two of the four reliabilities and then goes on to the third:
Rely on Direct Words, not Indirect Words. The Mahayana tradition recognizes 100 volumes of Buddha’s words and 200 commentaries or shastras. It is important to know the meaning of words. Many of Buddha’s teachings were meant for a particular audience at a particular time and thus need to be put in context and interpreted. Our wisdom will tell us which of Buddha’s teachings is direct and which is interpretable and how to interpret it. The commentaries of the great masters help with that.
