REFUGE MANTRA RETREAT

This retreat is a mantra retreat for all Buddhist practitioners.

Refuge in Buddha, Dharma and Sangha is the basis of Buddhist practice at every level, including tantra. Gelek Rimpoche recommended that his students make an effort to complete certain practice retreats including the recitation of 100,000 refuge mantras, using the five mantras. Rimpoche often reminded us of the great tantric practitioner who said the King of Tantras, Guhyasamaja practice, is not profound. However, the three lines of refuge are profound.

A refuge retreat allows us time to focus and reflect on what refuge means to us in order to refine, expand and improve our understanding. It also allows time to develop and hone refuge visualizations, such as the refuge tree or the jewel method, which strengthens our connection and serves to purify problems that may arise with our refuge. We can also review and deepen the many meditations on refuge in the Lam Rim. We can meditate on how practitioners of the three scopes take refuge and check our own with these perspectives in mind.

By meditating on causal and result refuge, we can gain greater confidence and trust in the guru, yidam, three jewels, and in our own ability to progress along the spiritual path.
